Macropodus opercularis belongs to the family Osphronemidae. This species is native to East Asia (China, Vietnam, Korea, Taiwan), where it inhabits shallow waters with dense vegetation and calm surface areas.

Tank Setup & Water Parameters

A minimum tank size of 80 litres is recommended (keep singly or one male with multiple females). Maintain water temperature between 16.0–26.0°C with a pH of 6.0–8.0 and hardness of 5–20 dGH. One of the first tropical fish kept in aquaria. Very hardy and tolerant of cool water. Males are aggressive towards each other. Excellent jumper; needs a lid.

Feeding Guide

Omnivore; flakes, pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, live foods. Feed small portions 1–2 times daily, offering only as much as they can consume within a few minutes. A varied diet promotes optimal health and vibrant colouration.
